Cycle Andalusia’s Famous Vía Verde de la Sierra
Across Spain, there are hundreds of charming small towns, but only a select few have been officially recognised as “Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España” (The Most Beautiful Villages of Spain).
This association was created to celebrate and protect Spain’s most picturesque and historically significant villages; places that still preserve their authentic architecture, local traditions, and community life.
To earn the title, a village must meet strict criteria:
Beautifully preserved historic architecture
A population under 15,000
A strong sense of cultural identity
Cleanliness, sustainability, and care for its surroundings
Each year, only a handful of villages are added to the list — and several of them are right here in Andalusia, close to Ronda.
Zahara de la Sierra
Living and working in Ronda, we’re lucky to be surrounded by some of the most beautiful villages in Spain — officially recognised for their charm, history, and authenticity.
Here are four Pueblos Más Bonitos de España that you can easily explore on a day trip or cycling route from Ronda:
Tucked away in the heart of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, this mountain village is the perfect blend of whitewashed houses, cobbled streets, and dramatic mountain views. It’s known for its cool climate, traditional craftsmanship, and welcoming local atmosphere.
Why it’s special: Grazalema is a haven for nature lovers and hikers, surrounded by lush forests, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking panoramic viewpoints.
How to visit: The White Village Pinsapo Tour visits Grazalema or renting a car and driving from Ronda are the best ways to visit the town.
Perched high above a turquoise reservoir, Zahara de la Sierra is one of the most photographed villages in Spain. Its narrow streets climb up to a castle ruin that overlooks the entire valley.
Why it’s special: Zahara combines history, nature, and incredible views. Its medieval castle and museum are exceptional examples of Andalusia's colourful history.
How to visit: Our Las Palomas Pass cycling experience provides a great opportunity to see the village. Alternatively, renting a car will give you the freedom to explore the town at your own pace.
Setenil is unlike anywhere else. Built directly into a rocky river gorge, its streets are literally carved beneath huge rock overhangs, with cafés, homes, and shops tucked into the stone.
Why it’s special: A village built into the rock, half nature, half architecture, and all character make it a very unique village.
How to visit: Often included in our cycling routes from Ronda, such as our Ronda to Setenil route. Setenil is a short and scenic ride through rolling countryside.
Further west, overlooking the Atlantic coast, Vejer de la Frontera is a timeless hilltop town where whitewashed lanes meander between ancient city walls. It’s both elegant and laid-back, a fine blend of Moorish heritage and coastal charm.
Why it’s special: A perfect mix of history, art, and coastal views and ideal for a longer day trip.
How to visit: Best reached by car from Ronda, it's worth making a lovely round trip through the province of Cádiz.

What makes these “Most Beautiful Villages” truly special isn’t just their whitewashed streets or historic architecture; it’s the way of life that continues within them.
Locals gather in the village square to chat, children play in the narrow lanes, and the rhythm of daily life still follows the pace of the seasons.
From my base in Ronda, I’ve seen visitors fall in love with these villages, and not just for their beauty, but for their authenticity, delicious local food, and genuine warmth.
They capture the true spirit of Andalucía; places that preserve their traditions while welcoming travellers to experience them with curiosity and respect.
