Discover Andalusia’s Top-Rated, Award-Winning Cycle Route - VIA VERDE DE LA SIERRA - OUR BEST SELLING DAY TRIP FROM RONDA
Natural beauty & variety: The trail begins in Ronda’s old quarter, offering incredible views of its iconic Puente Nuevo, then descends into peaceful countryside and riverside paths.
A refreshing reward: At the end of the route is the Cueva del Gato, a striking cave with a natural pool, perfect for a dip after a warm hike.
Cultural touchpoints: The path follows part of the GR-249 trail, crosses rivers, and connects with old railway lines.
Flexible return options: After the cave, you can walk on to the village of Benaoján or arrange a taxi or train back to Ronda.
Starting point: Begin in the historic El Barrio district of Ronda, very near Puerta de Almocábar.
Scenery: Descend past Ronda’s walls, enjoy views of the Puente Nuevo, and then enter agricultural and rugged natural landscapes.
Trail sections:
First part: mixed terrain, partly paved.
Mid-route: you’ll switch from the GR-249 to quieter trails around kilometre 9.
Final: a technical section with scree, exposed single-track, boulder fields, then riverside trail.
River crossing & swimming: Near the cave, the path follows the Guadalevín River; there’s a refreshing pool at the cave’s mouth. On hot days, many hikers take the plunge.
Finish in Benaoján: You can continue to the town, have lunch, or catch a train/taxi back.
Distance: 12.4 km
Elevation: 210 m ascent, ~ 480 m descent
Surface: 37% paved, 63% unpaved
Technical sections: Between km 8 and 10, the trail becomes rocky and uneven; caution is advised during descent.
Skill level: Moderate, not overly difficult, though some trail sections demand focus and good footwear.
Puente Nuevo viewpoint: A classic Ronda photo spot, but best appreciated from below on this hike.
GR-249 trail segment: This connects you with regional paths, adding a sense of history to your walk.
Union of two rivers: Where the Guadalevín and Guadalcobacín rivers join to form the Guadiaro River, a serene natural moment.
Cueva del Gato pool: Perfect for a refreshing swim, but always test the water first!
Estación de Benaoján: A charming place to wrap up your trek, with a restaurant and links back to Ronda.
What to bring: Good hiking boots, plenty of water, a hat, and a small first-aid kit.
When to go: Spring and autumn are ideal for milder temperatures; summer can be hot, but the cave’s water is a great payoff.
Return logistics: If walking back isn’t an option, check train schedules from Benaoján-Montejaque or plan for a taxi.
Safety: Some parts of the trail are rocky; take care on descents, and don’t attempt risky scrambles without experience.
